Cereal Magazine – Volume 14

I recently picked up the most recent Cereal magazine from Ideas In Paper, my local magazine store. I selected this magazine in particular because of the simple, yet beautiful layout, minimalist style and stunning photography. I purchased it to act as inspiration for my own design of a uni visual report. Cereal is a biannual, travel & style magazine based in the UK. Each issue focusses on a select number of destinations, alongside engaging interviews and stories on unique design, art, and fashion.

I brought the Autumn Winter 2017, Volume 14 edition. In this volume, they visit the iconic Farnsworth House, tour the cities of Chicago and Edinburgh and escape to the Shetland Islands. They spend the day at Wimbledon, interview Vincent Van Duysen and Grant Achatz, and mediate on the subject of desire.

These are a few of my favourite quotes from the magazine:

‘Reading cookbooks, eating out, and travelling. Everything I see, hear, touch, and smell is pushed through a food kaleidoscope. If I’m listening to a song…I connect it to a menu or an experience at the restaurant. It’s the filter I use to experience the world. I pay attention and let it all sink in.’ – Grant Achatz, head chef and co-founder of Alinea, who fuses art and food.

I am always trying to find new recipes that I can try out at home, especially when I go to restaurants and enjoy a dish; I love experimenting with recreating my own version.

‘I always say I am an image maker rather than a storyteller. Even so, people always ask: “What is that?” We seem to need to have some kind of story or a point of reference.’ – Photographer, Dirk Braeckman’s response to his work being regarded as ‘visually ambiguous.’

I sometimes think it is good to just look at a piece of art and appreciate what you are looking at for the beauty of what it is, rather than always trying to find a possible meaning.

‘I think it is more important to be aware of who we are. This house is a sanctuary for me, where I disconnect. It’s about calming down and creating silence, and being in a space that doesn’t overstimulate the scenes.’ – Vincent Van Duysen, explaining his idea that architecture should be about the art of living well, rather than fast tracking utilising the digital age.

For me, it is essential for the place I return to each day to be a relaxing environment and a space that I can remove myself from the outside world completely.

‘It was the kind of perfect travel moment when every sense is fulfilled: the tartness of ice cream; the feel of the sun after hours of grey…the smell of fresh flowers.’ – Sean Hotchkiss, Diner’s Club, Edinburgh edition.

I love going away and disconnecting from technology and any little worries; I try to take in my surrounding and appreciate where I am.

‘Even the most basic t-shirt must be perfectly cut and proportioned…we never want anything to feel forced. The clothes should have a completely effortless quality.’ – Karin Gustafsson, Creative director of COS, Creative Understandment.

This to me effectively sums up COS as a brand: reliable, high quality and consistent.

‘To be a traveller is to wander with both curious, earnest wonder – and a sharp sense of humour.’ – Leigh Patterson, A Wild Terrain.

When I go to a new place, I am always looking around and capturing moments by taking photos and exploring new places with my family.

‘Let everything happen to you

Beauty and terror

Just keep going

No feeling is final’ – Rainer Maria Rilke.

Below are some of my favourite pages, in terms of layout, imagery, design and composition.
