My closest friend has constantly been saying how much she loves Kinky Boots, both the film and the musical, which she has now seen three or four times. This year for my mum’s birthday, we decided to go and see the musical because it was one of the few we hadn’t watched previously. I wasn’t even sure what the storyline was before going, I just knew that if my friend greatly enjoyed it, I would too. We attended the matinee showing at the Adelphi Theatre in the Stand, London.
Kinky Boots won the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Musical and now is the winner of every major Best Musical award. After seeing the show, this is something I very much understand! The songs are by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and the majority are upbeat and all extremely catchy; the songs and the dancing made the show in my opinion.
This fabulous musical is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mindset. Kinky Boots takes the audience from the factory floor to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business, Price & Son. With the shoe factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a flamboyant performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos – red boots!
The show really does proudly prove that sometimes the best way to fit in is to stand out!
All of my family loved the show and would see it again in a heartbeat. I also now really want to watch the movie to see how similar the two are. The show was hilarious, heartwarming and so much fun! It was glorious and I definitely left feeling very much uplifted. I would highly recommend Kinky Boots and its infectious energy and richly enjoyable performance. It was dazzling, sassy and fabulous; an absolute hoot of a show. My sister’s boyfriend said he now wants to get a pair of red boots!
I loved the overall message that we need to accept ourselves before we can accept others. Respect is the key!
