Yesterday I attended the ÷ Tour at Wembley Stadium in London with my dad who kindly took me. This is the third world concert tour by Ed Sheeran, in support of his third studio album, ÷.
The evening began with sets from the two support acts; the first being Anne-Marie. I hadn’t heard of her name previously so those who also aren’t aware, she is an English singer and songwriter. I also didn’t realise that she was part of several charting singles, including Clean Bandit’s “Rockabye”, featuring Sean Paul, which peaked at number one.
Lawson is also an English singer-songwriter and musician and was apparently the first artist to be signed by Ed Sheeran’s new record label, Gingerbread Man Records. I was aware of his hit single, “Wasn’t Expecting That,” which I really enjoy and is possibly what he is best known for.
Ed Sheeran’s nationwide 2018 UK stadium tour, marks the biggest tour of his career to date! The arena was extremely busy with a vast variety of individuals of all ages and genders, with equal love for the talented Ed Sheeran. He is someone that I have always wanted to see live and so I was very grateful for the opportunity.
He casually walked onto the stage in jeans and a basic t-shirt with his shiny guitar. I was in awe of the way that Ed manages to fill the stadium with his voice alone. Nothing about the whole set overshadowed his great-sounding voice. He has no band or backing vocalists, however he effectively created this himself with his loop pedals. This equipment allows him to record his guitar before essentially ‘looping’ it as he continues to play, he could start and stop this whenever required throughout each track. This fascinated me; he is so talented.
He possesses a mystic ability to turn cavernous 80,000-capacity spaces into such a relaxed and welcoming environment. Even when talking, he seems so down to earth and relatable; just like one of us. He almost reminds me of myself, slightly awkward in public situations, not wanting to dance or move and having the tendency to stare down at the stage with a blank face, not really looking like I’m enjoying the show, but deep down staring in wonder and loving every second.
The atmosphere was electric with everyone’s support and was a very memorable experience. He’s a skilled performer with an endearing stage presence, a great voice and honest soul. Although he was performing solo with only his guitar, he conducted the stage and captivated the audience effortlessly. He was modestly confident and at ease carrying the evening with his showmanship and friendly demeanour. My favourite songs of the evening have to be Castle on the Hill and Thinking Out Loud, two of my favourites from his previous albums. I loved the way he effectively brought the songs to life.
Ed humorously mentioned the “hero dads” chaperoning their children and the dragged-along boyfriends. I’m very grateful for my hero dad for taking me to the show and allowing me to experience everything I am able to!
